Understanding Dental Exams & Cleanings

A routine exam and cleaning is the foundation of everything else we do. It's how small problems get caught while they're still small, and how healthy mouths stay that way. If it's been a while since your last visit, here's exactly what happens at a checkup, why it matters, and what to expect when you come in.

What happens during a dental exam?

Your dentist examines every tooth for decay, cracks, and wear, checks your gums for signs of inflammation or recession, and looks at existing fillings and crowns to make sure they're holding up. We also check your bite and jaw joints and perform a quick oral cancer screening of your lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat. Digital x-rays, taken when needed, let us see between teeth and below the gumline where problems hide.

What does a professional cleaning involve?

Even with great brushing, plaque hardens into tartar in spots a toothbrush can't reach. A hygienist uses gentle instruments to remove that buildup above and just below the gumline, then polishes your teeth to remove surface stains and leave them smooth. Flossing and, if appropriate, a fluoride treatment round things out. Most patients find the whole visit comfortable and leave with that fresh, clean feeling.

How often should you have an exam and cleaning?

For most people, every six months is the right rhythm. If you have a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain health conditions, we may recommend visits every three or four months. Kids benefit from regular visits too, both for prevention and to get comfortable in the dental chair early. We'll tailor a schedule to what your mouth actually needs.

What should you expect as a new patient?

Your first visit to our Jupiter office is a little longer so we can get to know you. We'll review your health history, take a full set of x-rays, do a thorough exam, and complete your cleaning. You'll get clear, honest feedback and a written plan if anything needs attention. Nervous patients can ask about nitrous oxide at any appointment, including a cleaning.

Does insurance cover exams and cleanings?

Most dental plans cover preventive visits at or near one hundred percent, which is one of the best reasons to use them. If you don't have insurance, our in-house dental plan is designed specifically to make preventive care affordable, and our financing options page explains other ways to manage costs. Either way, we'll give you a clear picture of any out-of-pocket costs before treatment.

When should you book your next visit?

If it's been more than six months, now is a good time. Bleeding gums, sensitivity, bad breath that won't go away, or a spot that catches your floss are all reasons to come in sooner. Regular visits are the least expensive dental care you'll ever receive, because they prevent the expensive kind.
