A cephalometric x-ray captures the full side profile of your face, jaw and airway. Nothing goes inside your mouth, and it's completely painless.
Cephalometric and panoramic x-rays show the nasal and sinus passages that small bitewing x-rays miss, with less radiation.
You simply stand still for a few moments while the machine takes the image. That's it.
A cephalometric x-ray is a side-profile image of your head that shows how your teeth, jaws, and facial bones relate to one another. It's a key tool for planning orthodontic treatment, evaluating bite problems, and assessing the airway. Here's what it shows, when it's used, and what to expect.
Often just called a ceph, it's a single x-ray taken from the side of your head that captures your entire skull profile, from the forehead to the chin and the upper neck. Unlike the small x-rays used to check for cavities, a ceph shows the big picture: the position of your upper and lower jaws, the angle of your front teeth, the soft tissue profile of your face, and the shape of your airway.
The most common reason is orthodontic planning, including clear aligner treatment, where we need to understand how your teeth sit within your jaws before moving them. It's also used to evaluate jaw growth in children and teens, diagnose bite problems such as an overbite or underbite, plan jaw surgery, and assess the airway in patients who may have sleep apnea. TMJ evaluation sometimes calls for one as well.
It's quick and painless. You'll stand or sit with your head positioned gently in a holder so the image is taken from a consistent angle, and the x-ray is captured in a few seconds. Nothing goes in your mouth. The digital image appears on screen right away, where we can trace and measure key landmarks to guide your treatment plan.
Yes. Like all our imaging at our Jupiter office, cephs are taken digitally, which requires far less radiation than older film methods. We take them only when the information will genuinely affect your diagnosis or treatment. A protective apron is used, and if you're pregnant or have concerns, let us know so we can talk through timing.
When a ceph is part of orthodontic treatment, it's often included in orthodontic benefits, if your plan has them. For other uses, coverage varies. We'll check your benefits and include the cost in your personalized treatment quote so there are no surprises. Our financing options and in-house dental plan pages explain other ways to manage costs.
If you or your child are considering orthodontic treatment, have a noticeable bite issue, or have been told your airway should be evaluated, a consultation is the right starting point. We'll determine whether a ceph is needed and take it right here, so you don't have to be sent elsewhere for imaging.
