A quick 3D scan shows your teeth, bone, nerves and airway in detail, so we can plan treatment more precisely and more safely.
Doctors wouldn't plan a knee replacement without 3D imaging. We believe your smile deserves the same care.
Traditional x-rays show a flat picture. i-CAT 3D imaging shows your teeth, jaws, nerves, sinuses, and airway in three dimensions, in a single scan that takes under half a minute. Here's what this technology does, when we use it, and why it makes treatment safer and more predictable.
i-CAT is a type of cone beam CT scanner designed specifically for dentistry. It rotates around your head once, capturing hundreds of images that are assembled into a detailed three-dimensional model. We can rotate that model, slice through it at any angle, and measure structures to a fraction of a millimeter. It's like the difference between a photograph of a house and being able to walk through it. That level of detail removes much of the guesswork from complex treatment.
Most often for dental implant planning, where seeing exact bone volume, density, and the location of nerves and sinuses lets us place implants precisely and avoid surprises. It's also valuable for wisdom tooth evaluation, complex root canals, TMJ and jaw joint assessment, airway evaluation for sleep apnea, orthodontic planning, and diagnosing pain or infections that don't show up on regular x-rays.
Simple and comfortable. You'll sit or stand while the scanner rotates around your head, which takes under 30 seconds. Nothing goes in your mouth, and you can breathe normally. The images are ready to review almost immediately, and we'll walk you through what we see on the screen. Many patients find it fascinating to look at their own anatomy in 3D.
The i-CAT uses a focused, low-dose beam and captures only the region needed, so the radiation exposure is a small fraction of a medical CT scan. We recommend a 3D scan only when the added detail will genuinely change your diagnosis or treatment plan, never routinely. If you have questions about exposure, we're glad to talk through the specifics.
Coverage varies. Some dental plans cover cone beam scans when they're part of implant or surgical planning; others don't. We'll check your benefits and tell you the cost up front as part of your personalized treatment quote. Our financing options and in-house dental plan pages outline additional options.
If you're considering implants, have a complex tooth or jaw issue, or have been referred elsewhere for a scan, ask us. Having i-CAT technology right in our Jupiter office means faster answers, fewer appointments, and treatment planned with a complete picture. A consultation is the easiest way to find out whether a scan would help in your case.
