Many people don't realize their headaches, jaw pain or teeth grinding may come from the jaw joint, and that a dentist can help.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders affect the joints that let you open and close your mouth. Symptoms often get worse with stress.
A common cause is a misaligned bite. Nighttime grinding is common too, and over time it can wear down your teeth. Relief is often possible without surgery.
We examine your jaw, bite and teeth, and use imaging to see the joints clearly.
A custom night guard can protect your teeth from grinding and ease jaw strain.
Gentle bite adjustments or realignment can address the cause, often without surgery.
TMJ disorder is one of the most common reasons Jupiter-area patients come to us with jaw pain, and one of the most misunderstood. Here's a plain-language look at what's actually happening in the joint, what tends to cause it, and what your options look like once we've had a chance to examine you.
There's rarely one single cause. A misaligned bite is common, but so is nighttime grinding or clenching (bruxism), which puts steady pressure on the joint while you sleep and often goes unnoticed until symptoms show up. Stress, arthritis in the jaw joint, and a past injury to the face or jaw can all play a role too, sometimes in combination.
Most patients notice a clicking or popping sound when they open or close their mouth, along with soreness in the jaw, face, or neck. Morning headaches are common, since a lot of grinding happens overnight. Some people also notice ringing in their ears or a jaw that briefly feels stuck or locked, which is usually the joint itself signaling that it's under strain.
Diagnosis usually starts with a hands-on exam: we watch how your jaw moves, check your bite, and feel for tenderness around the joint. Imaging helps us see the joint clearly when we need more detail. Interestingly, a lot of patients discover they have TMJ disorder during a routine exam, not because they came in specifically for jaw pain.
Most cases respond well to conservative treatment. A custom night guard is often the first step, since it protects your teeth and takes pressure off the joint while you sleep. Depending on what's driving your symptoms, a gentle bite adjustment can help too. Surgery is rarely necessary and is really a last resort, reserved for cases that don't improve with these more conservative approaches.
It depends quite a bit on your plan and what's causing your particular case, so it isn't something we can answer with a flat number. Once we've examined you, we can walk you through exactly what's involved and what your options look like, including our in-house dental plan for patients without insurance.
If you're waking up with headaches, noticing your jaw click or feel like it's catching, or you can tell you've been clenching or grinding, it's worth having someone take a look before it becomes a bigger problem. Jaw pain that lingers for more than a week or two is generally a good signal to get it checked out.
