Early oral cancer often has no symptoms. That's why we include a gentle screening at your regular checkup, when treatment is most effective.
We look and feel for anything unusual in your lips, mouth, tongue, gums, throat, salivary glands, face and neck.
Most oral cancers are linked to habits like smoking, tobacco use and heavy drinking. If you'd like help making changes, just ask. We're here to support you, never to judge.
Your screening is part of every regular exam and cleaning.
An oral cancer screening takes about two minutes, is completely painless, and can be lifesaving. It's part of every routine exam at our office, but many patients don't realize it's happening or why it matters. Here's what we're looking for, who's at risk, and what to do if we find something worth a closer look.
It's a visual and hands-on check of your entire mouth and surrounding areas: lips, gums, tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, the inside of your cheeks, your throat, and the lymph nodes in your neck and jaw. We're looking for anything unusual, such as sores that haven't healed, red or white patches, lumps, thickened tissue, or changes in texture or color. The screening is built into every exam and cleaning at no extra step.
Tobacco use of any kind and heavy alcohol use are the biggest risk factors, and the two together multiply the risk. HPV infection has become a leading cause, particularly of cancers at the back of the throat, and it affects people who have never smoked. Sun exposure raises the risk of lip cancer, which matters in Florida. Age and a history of oral cancer also play a role. That said, oral cancer can affect anyone, which is why we screen everyone.
See us promptly about a sore or ulcer in your mouth that doesn't heal within two weeks, a lump or thickening anywhere in your mouth or neck, a red or white patch, numbness, difficulty swallowing, a persistent sore throat or hoarseness, or a change in how your teeth or dentures fit. Most of these turn out to be harmless, but they deserve a look.
Most findings are benign, such as an irritation from a sharp tooth or a harmless tissue change. If we see something that warrants attention, we may recheck it in a couple of weeks, or refer you to a specialist for a biopsy, which is a simple procedure that provides a definitive answer. Early detection is the single biggest factor in successful treatment, so we never take a wait-and-see approach with anything suspicious.
Because the screening is part of your regular exam, it's typically included in your preventive benefits with no separate charge. If a follow-up or referral is needed, we'll explain any costs involved ahead of time. Patients without insurance can use our in-house dental plan, and our financing options page covers other options.
At least once a year, and every six months if you're at higher risk. The easiest way is simply to keep up with your regular checkups at our Jupiter office. If you've noticed something in your mouth that worries you, don't wait for your next scheduled visit; call and we'll take a look.
